Research for decisions
that cannot wait
for consensus.

at.Pointe Research examines the operating, commercial and data shifts reshaping automotive and adjacent asset-heavy industries. Each piece is written to clarify what is changing, why it matters and what decision follows.

The research proposition

Written from operating experience, not market commentary. Most industry analysis describes the event. at.Pointe Research follows the operating mechanics: economics, ownership, systems and the decisions that have to move with them.

The research draws on the same questions encountered in transformation work: how economics are shifting, where operating models are breaking, how data and systems constrain execution, and which decisions organisations are postponing. It is grounded in more than 17 years of operating, commercial and transformation experience across OEM, importer and dealer-network environments in more than 30 markets.

Data governance should follow decision ownership

Start from the decision: define the information requirement, preserve enterprise data authority, and make the exception route explicit.

A company can have named data owners, agreed definitions and dashboards that refresh on schedule while an important commercial or operational decision still waits because the information is unclear at the moment somebody has to act.

The decision owner should define what the information must achieve for that decision: the required freshness, completeness, tolerance and exception response. The data owner should govern how those requirements are met consistently across the enterprise, including authoritative sources, definitions and controls.

The practical test is what happens when a decision cannot proceed. Wrong source data calls for a quality intervention; late information calls for a latency intervention; conflicting systems require source authority; and complete evidence without authority to act is a decision-rights problem.

In market entry, asset-light is not the same as reversible

Release each commitment against the operating evidence it needs and the flexibility it removes.

Asset-light structures can reduce fixed investment while still creating deep operating lock-in through importer contracts, dealer commitments, customer and vehicle data, systems, inventory and network continuity. The accounting category says little about how difficult the decision will be to unwind.

Automotive adds a harder boundary: the first registered customer vehicle creates obligations that survive any later decision to stop. Warranty, recall execution, parts and technical support remain, while the customer's residual value can depend on confidence that the brand will stay.

The viewpoint sets out four decision states and a commitment register for testing when to preserve flexibility, when to design reversibility into contracts and when the value of scarce access, speed or partner commitment justifies making the next decision harder to reverse.

The next EV service bottleneck is exception capability, not training volume

When a repair needs expertise, information or authority beyond the local workshop, the network needs a defined route to the next decision.

A training register can show every required qualification as complete while a difficult vehicle case waits for log access, specialist review or repair authority. Those dependencies need to be visible before management decides how to improve capability.

The viewpoint proposes measuring time to the next competent decision: from the point at which a case needs information or authority its owner cannot supply until a qualified person authorises a specific next action. An acknowledgement or ticket transfer does not stop that clock.

Local sites retain responsibility for the work they can perform safely. Defined escalation routes make specialist capability and decision authority reachable, while resolved cases feed back into diagnostic guidance, tools and training. Decision delays remain separate from the time needed to deliver a part or complete an authorised repair.

Viewpoint  ·  Pricing & Commercial Management  ·  September 2026

Pricing architecture is a management system, not a price list

A price list can be perfectly maintained while pricing is unmanaged.

The visible price is only the output. The real commercial decisions happen across dealer support, fleet terms, finance, trade-ins, campaign support, ageing stock and local market exceptions.

Individually, those decisions may all be reasonable. Together, they determine margin, stock movement and customer positioning. That makes pricing architecture an operating-management question rather than simply a price-list exercise.

The practical system connects segmentation, decision authority, exception logic, margin visibility, inventory economics and governance. It gives local decision-makers room to use information the centre may not have, while making the economic consequence and ownership of each exception visible.
